Re: dvd burning - hardware error (sense code 30200)

I did this and the image burned fine to the hard drive but then had an error when burning that file to DVD, so I guess that eliminates Encore. It must be a problem with my actual DVD burner :-(

As I said in #2, I don't do Mac... if you have a desktop computer, replacing the writer should be fairly easy (I say easy because I build my own Windows computers so it is easy for me)

A laptop of any kind will be more difficult, most likely meaning a trip to a repair company

Loud sound 'blip' between sequences

You know how you can sometimes hear a loud 'blip' when you turn on an amp if the volume is turned up, particularly with older amps? Well, I'm hearing the same sort of thing between some chapters when I burn to Blu-ray. And I hear the same thing on two Blu-ray players. Here's what I do:

  1. Drag various chapters into an Encore Timeline. These chapters have been prepared so that they don't need transcoding.
  2. Separate the chapters by blank sections of 1-2 seconds duration. This is to give a black image between chapters. Call them spacers. I made a decision not to include spacers inside the chapters because I thought it would give me more flexibility. So, if I want 5 seconds of black, I can do that by separating two chapters by five seconds. If I want only 2 seconds between other chapters…
  3. When I play the chapters in Premiere, Encore or by opening the individual M2TS files after burning, there are no blips.

I was a bit sus about using spacers. I thought: "There's no video and no audio there. How's Encore going to handle that?" It seems to handle it okay apart from these blips. And they don't occur for every spacer, just some.

QUES 1

Is it undesirable to separate chapters in a timeline to put black between chapters? I couldn't find anything in the manual warning against this.

QUES 2

Could this problem be caused by the chapters not requiring transcoding? i.e. because Encore is not transcoding across the boundary from one chapter to the next, sometimes there is a discontinuity in the audio at the boundary and this causes blips.

QUES 3

Would it be better to generate a black video in Premiere, with no audio, import that into Encore, and use that as a variable-length spacer? There would then be no gaps and I assume that would stop the blips.

I ignored the other three files in the transcode folder and just used the video and audio file. It recognized them and even had the chapter markings (I assume embedded in. The metadata)

You probably used the video file (m2v) from that same folder, and the "other" files (xmpses etc) are the ones that carry the metadata. You can move the files, as long as you keep the other files with it.

While many scenarios should work, you are more likely to see problems when you put multiple videos on the same timeline. This is most likely when using single audio file, but your work flow is riskier.

Prior to CS6,  you did not have the option of chapter playlists. Now you do.

Generate a single file from Premiere, with fades in/outs as desired, or generate your same files, but use a Play All playlist to run the whole movie.

Yes, there are pros and cons for each scenario.

What product do you have? Premiere Pro only? CS5 suite of some type?

Are you trying to run it as a trial? (Encore won't;  no trial.)

Is this a new install, or is this a new problem and Encore used to work?

Thank very much for your reply and looking in to this. I'll run these tests and report back with the results.

*Edit* Okay so I've tried to make a DVD using the same subtitle script, and the subtitles have a transparent background now. So this issue seems to be limited to Bluray's. Also I built an image and a Bluray folder, this makes no difference. When I play these back, the black bar is there again just like on the burned disc. Subtitles made manually show up the same way as the ones imported with a script, so thats not the problem either.

Any ideas on how to proceed? Or should I just learn to live with the fact that there will be ugly subtitles unless I burn them into the image beforehand.

Thanks again.

That is your workaround.

I'll try to test, but not much time...

Loop a video asset in Encore CS5

I need to be able to add over 100 short video assets to a project and have each video play continuously until the next button it hit on a remote which will advance to the next video in the list. Is this possible? I need each video to loop as it will play at an event and we don't know how long the video will need to play until we need to advance to the next section/video. Last time I had to do this I just repeated the video clip for a really long time so that we would be ensured that it would not advance to the next video, But I feel sure there is a better way to do this.

How did you do this the last time? All the videos on one timeline or ?

I took all the videos and placed on Premiere Pro timeline and repeated the same video over and over so that I guessed they would not "run out" while the person was talking and then set chaptermarkers to the next set of videos - is there a better way to do this?

The trick is going to be how you "advance" to the next video in Encore. That can be difficult, so I'd like to understand how you are doing it that is working.

So in Premiere, there is one timeline (sequence) per video, right?

Now what happens in Encore? You put multiple videos on the same Encore timeline, or...?

thats the point - don't know how to do in encore - don't care if I do this in encore or premiere.....just need a video to play over and over until i hit the next button.

here is what we are doing - an auction, an item that has a video about it is being auctioned off, until it is sold I need the video about the item to loop - when we are ready to go to the next item on the DVD we will hit the next button and the next item's video will play. Since I do not know how long the auctioneer will take it would be great to be able to loop a video until the next item is announced. ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE APPRECIATED!

Sorry; you referred to the last time you did this, so I assumed you had looped multiple videos in Encore.

Easy to loop a video in Encore; just set its end point to itself. And you press menu to get out of the loop. But you want the remote control button push to move to the next video. The only button option you have is "next chapter."

I did a quick test, building to a folder and using TMT5 to test. I could not get out of the first loop without pressing "menu."

Anyone else got a clever idea?

Thanks - I have had the same trouble - please I hope someone can help - 145 videos and I am having to place them in a premiere timeline for like 15 minutes or so each and then setting a chapter marker.....there just has to be a better way!

Buttons not highlighting in Encore

$

Hi,

I started using Encore a few weeks ago, and I cannot get the buttons on my main menu to highlight when they're selected in the preview, or when I burn the DVD. I've tried making my own on photoshop using the   prefix in a group, then the text layer, and then the (=1) prefix for a solid image to work as the highlight. I couldn't get that to work, so I used one of Encore's buttons, and then only one of the buttons would highlight. When that didn't work, I went online, and it looked like the problem might be that I have a Mac (I'm using a Macbook Pro with Retina and Encore CS6), so I went back on to photoshop and changed the highlight prefix to (=3), and I still can't get my buttons to highlight.

Am I missing something important?
