Matching still menus to video

I'm creating a DVD with motion transitions between menus. I'm using still images for the menus because once each page lands it doesn't move. I am getting issues with the color levels being way different between the PNG's and the M2V's. Is there any way to get those to match up?

Putting a levels 16-235 on the comp before I exported the PNG file seemed to fix it.

quick question re: chapter markers on first play DVD

Hi folks - I'm using Encore CS5.1 on imac, I've successfully burned first play DVDs many times before of my longish (70 min) projects.

A friend said that my discs run the risk of hanging during projection because there are no chapter markers and lower grade DVD players have to strain too much to absorb the whole DVD file in one take - the chapter markers alleviate that.

So I thought it would be a good idea to add chapter markers. I was told they don't have to do anything per se, they just have to be there to divide up the data.

When I went to export my first play DVD (created using dynamic link from premiere CS6) as usual, the export seemed to hang in the transcoding phase.

The transcode files were there in the folder after an hour or so, but after about 4 hours, nothing seemed to be happening so I figured something was missing and maybe I HAVE to make some kind of gawdawful menu page.

Honestly, I find the menu process odious. I am hoping my nice simple first play DVD can still be the way to do.

My questions are:

1. once I start using chapter markers, do I HAVE to have an accompanying menu?

2. Or should I expect to be waiting longer for the film to transcode or is that another issue?

3. is my friend right about the chapter markers making it easier on DVD players?

4. if I have to use a menu, can anyone steer me to a way to make a simple, text only menu with no silly pictures or fonts that just has a play button to work around this?

Thanks everyone!!!

EH

I don't think you need the chapter markers.

But first, can you still output a no chapter version? We need to know if your issue is unrelated.

Thanks Stan! Good thinking -- I exported the film to DVD without chapter markers and it worked just fine.

Do you have a particular reason you think the chapter markers are not needed?

thanks!

Back from dinner and can respond more fully.

DVDs (Encore versions in any event) break a movie down into chunks no larger than about 1 GB. That's a 24 minute1 second "chapter." And even with chapters, the actual file size created on the DVD is not different. That's not how chapters work. So I don't think it likely there is any data that suggests poor quality DVD players are at risk for poor playback of DVDs without chapters. There are lots of issues in playback consistency related to poor quality burners and disks, and yes, players, but you will have been likely to have experienced them if you have been providing disks to other people.

So first, figure out if you can still burn a DVD without chapters. If not, then we can try to address what has gone wrong with your setup.

Great to know! Yeah, I can burn it as usual just fine. This guy I was talking to just put some fear in me is all... I have to project stuff on DVD every once in a while and I want it to go well!

Thanks a lot for your help and insight!

They should not be a problem with adding chapter markers. You can have issues with chapters are too close together or if you put one at the very end at cetera.

I do not see it on the list of bug fixes and the known issues has not been updated yet. I'm in the process of a reinstall, and loading PR CS6/Encore now. I'll test when I can.

I believe it is not fixed. I created a small test file in PR and exported as H.264 Blu-ray. Opened EN, created a simple menu, imported the m4v and wav "as timeline," linked to menu, and build to folder ends with the ves error.

Upvote the bug report in JonesVid post # 35.

Ditto.

I have a project that gets updated every year. Each year, the client needs me to add one more video to their show reel. I created the 2018 video in PremPro, encoded as H264bluray with AME, import into Encore, build ISO - and when it gets to the very end - I get the same message. I removed the 2018 video from the project and presto, the ISO burns without a hitch.

I managed to re-encode the video using MPEG-2 bluray, and it worked fine. I guess you could say it's not a big compromise for me. No one is going to notice the difference. Still, I hope it gets resolved.
