Burning a Blu-ray video project on a DVD disc?

I've got tech question that I'm hoping someone may have some knowledge about.

I edited together an semi-HD (720P) movie in Adobe Premiere and exported it to Adobe Encore to make my disc.  I told Encore to make an iso image as I always do, to send over to the robot for duplication.  Here's the interesting part.  Just for kicks (I don't have a BD burner) I told it to make a BD image instead of a DVD image.  I burned the BD image to a DVD disc and it worked in my BD set top player (sony)  It looked beautiful and was definitely in HD.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  I've tried researching all over the internet and the responses are mixed.  Some folks say that a BD formatted movie on DVD will work in some players but not others.  Some say Sony players are more forgiving.  My BD iso file is a little over 2GB so well within the 4.7GB size parameter for DVD media.  My DVD iso for the same video is about half that size.  Thoughts? Any experience?  Thanks a bunch for any insight!  I guess what surprised me most is that a DVD can function like a BD if the information recorded on it is in BD format.

It is likely that this will work in all set-top BD players? or was I just lucky with my high-end sony BD player...

Do I need to waste the $$ on BD blanks if my .iso image is smaller than 4.7GB DVD's?

I've been transcoding all of my HD projects to DVD because I don't have BD capability.  If I could have been making BD compliations on DVD media this whole time, I'll be pretty upset!!! :-)

Thanks!

Joe
