I just did a qick test with a DVD test subtitle project built as a folder. The project has one subtitle track. It works correctly in Total Media Theater 5 and 6. It does not work correcty in VLC 2.1.2.
In VLC, it shows 3 subtitle tracks, the first called English (which is correct). But that track does not play the subtitles. Tracks 2 and 3 both play the subtitles.
I was using the regular menu tools; I do not see a remote control simulator to test subtitles in VLC. Is there one?
There are many options n the VLC preferences, but none that I think should make a difference in number of subtitle tracks.
I have no financial interest in TMT, and like VLC as a player. But I found that slideshow operation and subtitles do not perform correctly (like the project does no a burned disk), and TMT does.
