It's helpful that you mention that the AC3 file is a 5.1 mix - stereo is the default and should be trouble-free when exported from AME. Sorry but can't help with surround mixes, no experience there...

no problem. Actually I tried to work it out in Pinnacle 17 but there is no sound either. So either ac3 can not be heard or the file is corrupt ... maybe I should export it again on its own

5.1 sound in Encore is passthrough. I don't think you can even preview it (i.e. no sound). Burn a disk a see if it has 5.1. If you did that and I missed it, my apologies.

How are you making the 5.1 ac3 file? In Encore you can't monitor in 5.1 but it is folded down to stereo so you should hear something.
